Simon Avenell

Simon Avenell is a professor and associate dean at the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific.  He received his PhD in History at the University of California, Berkeley in 2003. Prior to the ANU he spent nine years at the National University of Singapore. His research interests include civil society, environmentalism, transnational activism, and political thought in contemporary Japan.  His publications include Making Japanese Citizens: Civil Society and the Mythology of the Shimin in Postwar Japan (University of California Press, 2010); “Antinuclear Radicals: Scientific Experts and Antinuclear Activism in Japan,” Science, Technology, and Society 21 (1) 2016; and Transnational Japan in the Global Environmental Movement (University of Hawaii Press, 2017).
