Alvin Y. So is Professor Emeritus at the Division of Social Science, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He is a comparative historical sociologist whose research interests include development, class and class conflict, social movements, and Greater China (mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan). His publications include The Global Rise of China (co-authored with Yin-Wah Chu, Polity Press, 2015), Class and Class Conflict in Post-Socialist China (World Scientific, 2013), Hong Kong’s embattled Democracy: A Societal Analysis (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1999), East Asia and the World Economy (co-authored with Stephen Chiu, Sage, 1995), Social Change and Development (Sage, 1990)
