Professor Jean Chiu is a civil society practitioner and scholar dedicated to social justice, migrant empowerment, and inclusive community development in Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. She has over seven years of professional engagement with the Judicial Academy at the Kaohsiung Juvenile and Family Court, where she has supported education and dialogue on family justice, same-sex marriage, child adoption, and the protection of vulnerable youth and families.
Professor Chiu is actively involved in migrant ministry and grassroots civil society work through Stella Maris and the Kaohsiung Friends of Indonesia (KFI). In these roles, she supports Southeast Asian migrant workers and families through English communication training, intercultural mediation, and community-based advocacy. Her work places particular emphasis on migrant women, faith-based networks, and everyday lived experiences, helping bridge gaps between migrants, local communities, and institutions.
In addition, Professor Chiu mentors women graduates in developing small-scale, English-education–based social enterprises, aiming to strengthen economic independence, leadership, and long-term community impact. These initiatives align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).
